How Do I Teach My Child About God?

Teaching kids about God starts with your own visible, lived faith. Pray, read, sing, and keep it hands-on (think Armor of God). Start small, stay steady, and let God grow what you plant.

A gentle start

Teaching a child about God doesn’t begin with a curriculum—it begins with your own faith. Children’s honest questions often land where we’re still unsure, so settle what you believe and live it in the open: point out God’s hand in everyday things—the flowers by the road, the meal on the table—and name your child as a gift from God.

“Your child is a gift from the hand of God.”

Keep prayer regular—before school, tests, sport, meals, and trips. Do personal Bible study where they can see it. Prefer a paper Bible so it’s obvious you’re with Scripture; a phone can just look like more screen time.

Make faith tangible: the Armor-of-God project

Trace your child’s outline on cardboard and “dress” the figure from Ephesians 6.

  • Belt of Truth — live aligned with God’s truth and resist deception.
  • Breastplate of Righteousness — God’s protection as we trust Christ.
  • Shoes of Peace — ready to carry the gospel and stand firm.
  • Shield of Faith — quenching the flaming arrows of doubt and fear.
  • Helmet of Salvation — resting in your identity in Christ.
  • Sword of the Spirit — God’s Word, learned and used with love.
  • Ten simple habits that last

  • Lead by example—children copy what you do more than what you say.
  • Pray and worship together—sing in the car; set a daily prayer rhythm.
  • Read Scripture together—discuss, ask open questions, listen to their thoughts.
  • Use age-appropriate tools—children’s Bibles, short devotions, visuals.
  • Ask open questions—“What does this show us about God? How could we live this?”
  • Model Christlike character—love, forgiveness, humility; show it practically by sharing and serving.
  • Keep faith joyful—our God is not boring; laugh, dance, celebrate.
  • Shape the home’s atmosphere—music, art, posted family values to revisit.
  • Celebrate faith dates—Easter, Christmas, and a “second birthday” (new birth).
  • Seek community—kids’ church, mentors, believing friends.
  • Remember: your child must choose in the end. You plant and pray; God gives the growth.

    Equip them for Bible study

Model love for the Word; start small and stay steady (better one living verse than ten forgotten).

Create a safe space for questions—there are no “dumb” questions here.

Keep it active—crafts, games, mini-dramas, Bible board games; let Scripture move through hands as well as minds.

Consider a simple journal for thanks, questions, and short prayers.

The SOAP method (works for any age)

S – Scripture: read a short verse or passage.

O – Observation: what stands out? keywords, phrases, context.

A – Application: how does this land in our life today?

P – Prayer: thank God and ask for power to live it.

    Scriptures to anchor

    Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Psalm 78:4; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:10–18; 2 Timothy 3:14–17; Matthew 19:14.

    A simple prayer

Father, let Your work start with me. Make my faith visible in our home. Teach me to pray and live so my child sees You. Help us read Your Word simply, consistently, and with joy. Form Christ’s character in us, give us a loving community, and draw my child’s heart closer to You. Amen.

    TL;DR

Begin with your faith—make it visible.

Pray, sing, and read together—keep it simple and joyful.

    Make it hands-on (Armor-of-God project).

Be consistent and patient—God works over time.

Your child must choose; you plant and pray, God gives growth.

    ’n Sagte begin

  • Gebruik ouderdomsgepaste hulpmiddels—kinderbybels, kort oordenkings, visuele hulpmiddels.
  • Soek gemeenskap—kinderkerk, mentors, gelowige vriende.
  • Onthou: jou kind moet uiteindelik self kies.

S – Skrif: lees ’n kort vers of perikoop.

A – Aansoek: hoe pas dit vandag in ons lewe?

    ’n Eenvoudige gebed

Vader, laat U werk by my begin. Maak my geloof sigbaar in ons huis.

    Samevatting

Begin by jou eie geloof—maak dit sigbaar.
